► What is the ALST?

The Academic Literacies Skills Test (ALST) is one of four New York State Teacher Certification Exams (NYSTCE) required by the New York State Department of Education and the New York State Board of Regents. This is a newly published exam required for all candidates who apply for teacher certification after May 1st, 2014.

► Who needs to sit for the ALST?

The ALST is an exam required by the NYSTCE for all candidates applying for a New York State Teaching License.  It is not required for educators not seeking a New York State Teaching License and it is not a requirement of the Kingsborough Community College Education Program.

► What is the best point in my education to sit for the ALST?

The ALST can be taken at any time before applying for a New York Teaching License.   However, students transferring to Brooklyn College should preferably take and pass the ALST prior to transfer.  Students transferring to Medgar Evers College, are required to sit for the exam prior to transfer, but passing is not a requirement. In the event that a student does not receive a passing grade, Medgar Evers will provide supports and preparation workshops for the ALST.
